Astro Google Fonts Optimizer 🚀

This Astro integration optimizes the performance of included Google Fonts.
It downloads the CSS of a Google Fonts stylesheet and inlines it directly into the page.
This can improve your Lighthouse score significantly.

The project is inspired by the NextJS Google Fonts automatic optimization feature.

Installation

npm install @herob191/astro-google-fonts-optimizer

Usage

The GoogleFontsOptimizer astro component does all the work for you to use a Google font efficiently.
It's recommended to include the component inside the <head> tag of your page. This could be inside a layout or in a normal page.
Just copy the URL of the google fonts stylesheet and use the component like this:

If you're using a Google Fonts compatible drop-in such as Bunny Fonts, you can specify the preconnect-URL via the preconnectUrl prop like this:

If left empty, the preconnect-URL will default to https://fonts.gstatic.com. Otherwise, the given value is used:

If first fetch of a font will fail, it'll be refetched three times by default in 100 milliseconds intervals You can configure this by setting retryInterval and retryAttempts props
