rehype-obsidian-callout
Rehype plugin to render Obsidian callouts.
What’s this?
This package is a unified (rehype) plugin to add support for Obsidian callouts.
Installation
This package is ESM only.
npm install rehype-obsidian-callout
In Deno, with esm.sh:
import rehypeObsidian from "https://esm.sh/rehype-obsidian-callout@1.0.1";
In browsers, with esm.sh:
<script type="module">
import rehypeObsidianCallout from "https://esm.sh/rehype-obsidian-callout?bundle";
</script>
Use
The markdown file with a callout:
> [!note]- I am a *collapsible* callout
> Some note shown after opening
And a script:
import { unified } from "unified";
import remarkParse from "remark-parse";
import remarkRehype from "remark-rehype";
import rehypeStringify from "rehype-stringify";
import plugin from "rehype-obsidian-callout";
const input = `
> [!note]- I am a *collapsible* callout
> Some note shown after opening
`;
const result = await unified()
.use(remarkParse)
.use(remarkRehype)
.use(plugin)
.use(rehypeStringify)
.process(input);
console.log(String(result));
Running the script yields (formatted for readability):
<details class="callout-type-note callout-block callout-collapsible">
<summary class="callout-title-section">
<span class="callout-icon-wrapper">
<!-- svg icon -->
</span>
<p class="callout-title">I am a <em>collapsible</em> callout</p>
</summary>
<div class="callout-content-section">
<p>Some note shown after opening</p>
</div>
</details>
With default styles this renders as:

Use with react-markdown

<ReactMarkdown rehypePlugins={[rehypeObsidian]}>{input}</ReactMarkdown>
Configuration
interface Config {
callouts: Record<string, { icon: string; heading?: string }>;
showIcon: boolean;
iconTagName: string;
}
const myConfig = {
callouts: {
custom: {
icon: `<!-- svg icon -->`,
heading: "Custom default heading",
},
},
};
Features
- supports markdown syntax in titles and netsted callouts
- supports custom callouts (styling with custom CSS, icons and default headings)
- modifies HTML instead of Markdown (no need for
allowDangerousHtml
in remark-rehype plugin) - no JavaScript is required for handling collapsible callouts (the implementation uses a
details
tag)
