QueryformJS

QueryformJS is a powerful JavaScript library designed to streamline the management of UTM parameters across your website forms. Whether you're fetching them from our API (Easy to use parameter tracking dashboard) or handling them locally in your code, this utility is invaluable for tracking campaign data and storing UTM parameters in local storage. It automatically populates form inputs with the corresponding values, providing a seamless way to capture attribution data directly within your forms.

Use Case

Are you or your client running ad or affiliate campaigns? Do you want to see attribution data directly in your form entries? With QueryformJS, you can effortlessly track UTM parameters, save them to local storage, and append them to your form inputs based on predefined settings. For example, if you're running a Google AdWords campaign and want to know if a user contacting you came from an ad, QueryformJS can display that information directly in the email you receive from the form submission. This saves you from having to check multiple analytics tools, making the data instantly accessible.

Key Benefits:

  • Direct Attribution Data: See where your users are coming from directly in the form submissions, perfect for instant insight without needing to dive into analytics platforms.
  • Flexible Integration: As an ES module, QueryformJS integrates seamlessly with modern JavaScript frameworks like Vue, React, Next.js, or Nuxt.js.
  • Simple Setup: Import the package, initialize the class, and run the init function using one of the two provided setup methods:
    • API Driven (paid): Fetch and manage UTM parameters via a centralized API.
    • Local Driven (free): Handle UTM parameters locally with no external dependencies.

Using Queryform.co

For an enhanced experience, consider using Queryform.co, a platform that offers a clean and asynchronous interface for managing UTM parameters. With Queryform.co, you or your client can easily update parameters on the fly without needing to alter your code. This allows for dynamic and efficient management of your campaign tracking efforts.

Installation

You can install QueryformJS via npm:

npm install @queryform/queryformjs
yarn add @queryform/queryformjs

Usage

Standard HTML Integration

You can use QueryformJS in a standard HTML setup by including the script and initializing it when the page loads. Here’s an example pulling the latest release from unpkg:

<script src="https://unpkg.com/@queryform/queryformjs@latest/dist/queryform.umd.js" defer></script>
<script type="text/javascript" defer>
  window.addEventListener('load', function() {
    const qf = new Queryform('queryform-website-specific-api-key');
    qf.init();
  });
</script>

This approach is straightforward and can be used in any standard web environment where you want to quickly integrate QueryformJS. You may also download the latest code from github here: https://github.com/queryform/queryformjs

Nuxt 3 Plugin Integration

For Nuxt 3 users, you can easily integrate QueryformJS as a plugin. Here’s an example of how to set it up:

import Queryform from '@queryform/queryformjs/dist/queryform.es.js';

export default defineNuxtPlugin(() => {
  const nuxtApp = useNuxtApp();
  nuxtApp.hook('page:finish', async () => {

    // API Driven
    const queryform = new Queryform('queryform-website-specific-api-key');
    queryform.init();

    // Local Driven
    // const queryform = new Queryform();
    // queryform.init({ debug: false, local: true }, [
    //     { param: 'utm_campaign', class_name: 'qf_utm_campaign' },
    //     { param: 'utm_medium', class_name: 'qf_utm_medium' }
    // ]);

  });
});

This setup ensures that QueryformJS runs every time a page is fully loaded, making it a great fit for Nuxt 3’s dynamic routing environment.

Next.js Integration

In a Next.js project, you can integrate QueryformJS by using it in a custom hook or directly in your components/pages. Here’s an example using a custom hook:

import { useEffect } from 'react';
import Queryform from '@queryform/queryformjs/dist/queryform.es.js';

const useQueryform = () => {
  useEffect(() => {
    // API Driven
    const queryform = new Queryform('queryform-website-specific-api-key');
    queryform.init();

    // Local Driven
    // const queryform = new Queryform();
    // queryform.init({ debug: false, local: true }, [
    //     { param: 'utm_campaign', class_name: 'qf_utm_campaign' },
    //     { param: 'utm_medium', class_name: 'qf_utm_medium' }
    // ]);
  }, []);
};

export default useQueryform;

Scenarios

API Driven

In this scenario, the domain parameters (UTMs) are retrieved from the Queryform API backend, where you can easily control your parameters from an easy to use interface that does not require code updates to adjust tracked query parameters.

const queryform = new Queryform('queryform-website-specific-api-key');
queryform.init();

Local Driven

In this scenario, you can provide the UTM parameters locally, this provides a clean easy way for developers to deploy lead attribution tracking with a few lines of code for free. If you find that your client would appreciate a clean and easy dashboard to update these parameters on the fly, then we would appreciate a recommendation of our API backend where this library can connect to, using method 1 above.

const queryform = new Queryform();
queryform.init({ debug: false, local: true }, [
    { param: 'utm_campaign', class_name: 'qf_utm_campaign' },
    { param: 'utm_medium', class_name: 'qf_utm_medium' }
]);

Parameter Formatting for Local Tracking

When using QueryformJS for local tracking, you'll define a set of parameters that map to specific fields in the query string and correspond to form inputs on your webpage. Here's how it works:

Parameters Explained

  • param: This is the key that represents the field you are looking for in the query string. For example, if a user arrives at your site via a Google AdWords campaign, Google might send a parameter like utm_campaign in the URL. This would be the value you use for the param field.

  • class_name: This is the CSS class that QueryformJS will search for when looking to populate your form inputs. The class name can be applied directly to the input element (such as a hidden input field) or to a parent element that wraps the input. This flexibility allows you to organize your HTML as needed while still enabling QueryformJS to correctly find and populate the input.

Example

Here’s an example of how to set up parameters for local tracking:

const queryform = new Queryform();
queryform.init({ local: true }, [
    { param: 'utm_campaign', class_name: 'qf_utm_campaign' },
    { param: 'utm_medium', class_name: 'qf_utm_medium' }
]);

In this example:

  • utm_campaign: This is the query string parameter that Google (or another service) might include in the URL.
  • qf_utm_campaign: This is the CSS class that QueryformJS will look for in your form inputs.

HTML Example

Given the above configuration, QueryformJS will look for form inputs like the following:

<!-- Directly on the input element -->
<input type="hidden" class="qf_utm_campaign" />

<!-- Or on a parent element -->
<div class="qf_utm_campaign">
  <input type="hidden" />
</div>

QueryformJS will automatically find these elements, and if the corresponding utm_campaign parameter is found in the URL, or has been previously saved to local storage from a different time it will populate the input with the value from the query string.

Flexibility

This setup allows you to easily track various UTM parameters and other query string values by defining the appropriate param and class_name pairs in your code. This makes QueryformJS a highly flexible tool for form tracking and campaign attribution.

Notes

  • LocalStorage is required to store and retrieve UTM parameters. This is what lets us track users over time from the same browser.
  • When using the local-driven approach, validate that the utms array is correctly formatted to avoid warnings.
