This command-line tool allows you to determine, given an AMI in a specific AWS region, its associated AMIs in the other AWS regions. This is especially useful for developers writing CloudFormation templates deploying EC2 instances that require to create mappings of AMIs for the different regions which the CloudFormation template supports.
This application allows you to create AMI mappings automatically using :
- A base AMI (e.g
ami-0de53d8956e8dcf80
) in a given AWS region. - A base AMI name (e.g
amzn2-ami-hvm-2.0.20190313-x86_64-gp2
) in a given AWS region.
In order to generate a mapping of AMIs given a base AMI associated with an AWS region, you can run the following command.
ami-resolver --region us-east-1 --output yaml --ami ami-0de53d8956e8dcf80
Here, the base AMI ami-0de53d8956e8dcf80
associated with the region us-east-1
is known, and passing it to ami-resolver
will generate the the AMI mapping for all the AWS regions.

The ami-resolver
command-line tool supports different ways to output the AMI mapping :
- Json - Creates a CloudFormation compatible AMI mapping in the JSON format.
- Yaml - Creates a CloudFormation compatible AMI mapping in the YAML format.
-
Text - Creates a textual output of the AMI mapping (this is the default choice when the
--output
option is not specified).
